RuneScape developer Jagex purchased again
The Carlyle Group did not disclose the terms of the trade, but The Daily Telegraph reported that the value of this deal is anticipated to be greater than the $530m (£390m) compensated for Jagex when it was acquired from its previous Chinese owners with a US holding company in 2020.
Jagex employs over 450 people, and is among the largest and most successful British gaming studios. It's best known for the fantasy MMO RuneScape, that has seen almost 300 million player balances made since its launch 20 years back. 2020 saw record amounts of subscribing players, Jagex said, more than half of that are in the USA. The Carlyle Group said it will encourage Jagex"as it continues to drive growth by evolving the heart RuneScape franchise through investment in R&D and improved content release prices, as well as launching new titles to diversify its portfolio and engage with the even wider community of gamers".
Jagex boss Phil Mansell said:"I am rather proud that Jagex is teaming up with Carlyle, a prestigious investment team that believes in the potential of Jagex, our vision for expansion, and will encourage us in accelerating our continuing growth strategy. We'll continue to expand our sport groups to make and deliver more great content for RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. We will continue to produce exciting adventures for our players, grow our international communities, construct new games to expand and further explore the RuneScape world, lend our expertise to release third-party matches out of like-minded online game developers, and also invest in the unbelievable tech and talent which powers this "
Jagex has been on something of a possession rollercoaster in recent years. In 2016 it was offered to a Chinese conglomerate for $300m - a mining firm with very little tech expertise. Eventually Jagex was marketed to US holding firm, Macarthur Fortune Holding, in May 2020.
